Florida: Muslim woman’s jail photo initially allows fully covered face

A woman arrested on a domestic battery charge was initially photographed for her Alachua County jail mug shot in clothing worn by some Muslim women that covered all of her face except her eyes. But she was later rephotographed to show her face in accordance with jail policies, officials said.

The woman, LaFleur Mauvette Mohamed, 38, did not want to discuss the matter when contacted by The Sun on Friday.

Mohamed was arrested Wednesday for reportedly wrestling her daughter over a cellphone. Her daughter reported to police that Mohamed slapped her, but Mohamed denied that, according to the arrest report.

Sheriff’s spokesman Art Forgey said the jail booking staffer who took the initial mug shot erred on the side of caution over concern about religious freedom and allowed Mohamed’s face to be covered.

“They didn’t want to step on anybody’s rights. Once a supervisor saw that, another photo was taken,” Forgey said. “There is a policy that everyone who comes into the jail is photographed and fingerprinted for identification purposes.”

The policy does not specify that the face must be shown, but Forgey said that is a “common sense” need for identifying the person. He added that Mohamed’s face was not covered on her driver’s license photo.

Mohamed declined to answer any questions from The Sun regarding whether she asked to remain covered, objected to the second photo or felt that her religious rights were violated.

Jail Capt. Walter Withey reported that this was the first time he has experienced this situation.

If it’s the first time it happened, why such caution? Because of CAIR’s jihad against law enforcement and common sense that has been ongoing for a decade or more, but significantly ramped up since 9/11. Don’t be surprised if terror-linked CAIR gets involved in this before it’s all said and done.
