Ellison trots out Qur'an 5:32, about how killing one innocent person is like killing the whole world. He doesn't mention that it was addressed as a warning to the "Children of Israel," or that many Muslims do not consider any non-Muslim to be innocent. Nor does he mention 5:33, which mandates crucifixion or amputation of the hands and feet on opposite sides for those who make war against Allah and his messenger, or spread discord in the land.
THE INNOCENT PERSON IS NOT THE INFIDEL BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO GO TO HELL FIRE ANYWAY, THE INNOCENT PERSON HE IS REFERRING TO IS THE MUSLIM!
Ellison also mentions Qur'an 2:256, "There is no compulsion in religion," without, of course, mentioning Qur'an 9:29, which stipulated that the People of the Book (primarily Jews and Christians) must be fought against until they "pay the jizya [poll-tax] with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." That is, they're not compelled to become Muslims, but they're denied equality of rights in the Islamic state.
Maher calls Ellison on the tired "out of context" excuse, but he isn't ready with any illustrative passages from the Qur'an that would have proved his point, and he lets Ellison get away with the boldfaced lie that Islamic terrorists explain their motivation in political, not religious terms. See here and here for two recent proofs of the contrary, and there are many, many more where those came from.
I have 2 main reasons:
Sura 5:32 contains a delicious quote that the Islamists and their sympathizers love to misquote, misrepresent or otherwise twist (see above about going to the original source!). Those who love to perpetrate the “Religion of Peace” angle (btw: Salam means Peace, not Islam, Islam means Submission) often cite this passage as:
One needn’t be an Islamic scholar to understand that the Islamists see various actions as “horrendous crimes” (they tell us so daily)
Dirty non-Muslims in Saudi Arabia (even though they were called in by the Saudi government when they feared Saddam Hussein would attack them after Kuwait) are surely committing “horrendous crimes” by setting foot in the holy nation.
Israelis, by conducting maintenance on the Temple Mount or aiding the Waqf with Al-Aqsa are also committing “horrendous crimes”.
Jew praying at the Wailing Wall, near the Temple Mount & Dome of the Rock (Haram Al Sheik) are absolutely committing “horrendous crimes”
World Banks, by taking interest on loans (forbidden in Islam) are also committing “horrendous crimes”
Short shorts, topless beaches, premartial sex? Surely “horrendous crimes”
Heck, the Western World, by very virtue that it is not Dar-Al-Islam (the Abode of Islam) is at least committing a “crime”
That said, targetting and killing these parties is not considered murder by the Islamists. They are not murdering one man or many, and thus, they are not murdering the whole world. It is really that simple.
This (among other reasons) is why clerics in Gaza bless suicide bombers as they go out on their “glorious martyrdom operations”. It is why Islamists hide behind, endanger and target civilians. Killing a heretic is not murder, on the contrary it is just, good. It is not only good, but an OUTRIGHT COMMANDMENT, IT IS THE ABSOLUTE DUTY OF A QURAN FOLLOWING MUSLIM TO KILL UNDER VARIOUS CONDITIONS… The very next Sura, 5:33 is extremely clear on this!
I recommend the Quran to one and all. It is eye-opening. It is also absolutely required reading for our time. Islamism is a huge factor in the modern world and it will continue to be so for the coming decades. It is the largest and also the fastest growing religion on the planet. It is (albeit not politically correct to say so) also the religion involved in the vast majority of world conflicts (I’m only stating facts, draw your own conclusions). To understand the battlefield and players of Darfur, Chechnya, Phillipines (Abu Sayaf), Israel/Palestine, Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iraq you must get a grounding in the Koran for it sits at the crux of it all .
- I want to understand the Islamists, the genesis of their hatred, their beliefs, and their goals. I like getting my information from as close to ‘the source’ as possible, so instead of relying on right or left slanted authors, instead of believing a specific passage exists I prefer to read it myself and draw my own conclusions.
- The 3 main “Holy Books” of monotheism are a treasure trove of history. Take away the miracles, and the stories of individuals from long ago – what is left is an accurate discussion of Middle Eastern history. Geography, Archeology, Anthropology and other disciplines have established that most major biblical events did take place. For example: there was war between the Jews and the Phillistines (David & Goliath); the Romans did conquer and subjecate the Jews of Israel (New Testament).

Those who love to perpetrate the “Religion of Peace” angle (btw: Salam means Peace, not Islam, Islam means Submission) often cite this passage as:
If a Muslim kills one man it is as if he kills the whole world.Of course, that is a gross misquote. The actual quote is from 5:32
[5:32] Because of this, we decreed for the Children of Israel that anyone who murders any person who had not committed murder or horrendous crimes, it shall be as if he murdered all the people. And anyone who spares a life, it shall be as if he spared the lives of all the people. Our messengers went to them with clear proofs and revelations, but most of them, after all this, are still transgressing. It is interesting that devout Muslims – who cannot even tolerate a cartoon of their prophet and consider those who dare question them as heretics – are absolutely comfortable with the perversion of the words of the G*d Almighty. A perversion you ask?
When is killing not murder?
On first glance, the simpler paraphrase involving “killing” may seem like a shorter form of the actual Sura 5:32 involving “murder” – but that is before you consider that “murder” is a relative construct. That is also before you consider the implicit allowance by omission of killing those who HAD committed “horrendous crimes”. You do not need to be a Sheik to understand this point, as any Western lawyer will tell you (after you’ve paid the $10K retainer): Killing is not always murder.

[5:33] The just retribution for those who fight GOD and His messenger, and commit horrendous crimes, is to be killed, or crucified, or to have their hands and feet cut off on alternate sides, or to be banished from the land. This is to humiliate them in this life, then they suffer a far worse retribution in the Hereafter. And it does not end there, it goes on (and on…and on…and on…):
SURA 9:5: …slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush.I can fill up several pages with such quotes (enough people have already, Google Robert Spencers Blogging the Quran or view the Skeptics Annotated List of Quranic intolerance at http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/Quran/int/long.html). The point being – the oft quoted passage utilized in a means to pretend that it is impossible for a good Muslim to kill ANYONE is a weapon of misinformation. Hopefully, by reading this, you are now armed with an Arrow2 missle against this word bomb (at very least a Patriot v2.0).
SURA 2:39: But they who disbelieve, and deny Our revelations, such are rightful Peoples of the Fire. They will abide therein.
(my note: Peoples of the Fire, aka burn them!)
SURA 2:191: And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution is worse than slaughter. And fight not with them at the Inviolable Place of Worship until they first attack you there, but if they attack you (there) then slay them. Such is the reward of disbelievers.
SURA 2:194: And one who attacketh you, attack him in like manner as he attacked you. Observe your duty to Allah, and know that Allah is with those who ward off (evil).
SURA 2:254: …The disbelievers, they are the wrong-doers
SURA 4:89: They long that ye should disbelieve even as they disbelieve, that ye may be upon a level (with them). So choose not friends from them till they forsake their homes in the way of Allah; if they turn back (to enmity) then take them and kill them wherever ye find them, and choose no friend nor helper from among them
SURA 4:91: If they keep not aloof from you nor offer you peace nor hold their hands, then take them and kill them wherever ye find them. Against such We have given you clear warrant.
